Press release – General elections in DR Congo

The Justice & Peace Commission Belgium mobilizes alongside the CENCO-ECC coalition

Drawing on its expertise on the issues of peace and democracy in Central Africa, and its close links with civil society organizations in the Great Lakes region, the Commission Justice & Peace Belgium (CJP) is closely following the final stages of the general electoral cycle in DR Congo.

CJP observes with concern the irregularities noted so far by its partners CENCO (National Episcopal Conference of Congo) and the ECC (Church of Christ in Congo) concerning the conduct of the polls through their Electoral Observation Mission ( MOE CENCO ECC). Among the irregularities, the MOE CENCO ECC revealed in its latest report this Wednesday, December 20 the late deployment of electoral materials and electoral agents in a significant number of polling stations. Other polling stations were not operational due to technical or logistical issues, such as the absence of voter lists or voting machines. Only a third of polling stations opened at the scheduled time.

In some areas, independent observers and party witnesses were prevented from carrying out their mission. In addition, security incidents were observed, such as tensions between activists of the various parties, ransacked offices and police violence in the face of nervous voters.

The Congolese are today going through a pivotal period in their national history. Gold, the shortcomings of the CENI (Independent National Electoral Commission) in the management of the electoral process, denounced by the CENCO and the ECC throughout the pre-electoral period, as well as the irregularities in the organization and conduct of the elections largely undermine the credibility of the entire process.

The Justice & Peace Commission remains at your layout for any interview or sharing of additional information.
