Burundi: the democratic turning point

The program “En Aparté” on French-speaking Christian Radio looks back on the explosive situation that Burundi is currently experiencing in the context of the upcoming presidential elections.

Burundi is experiencing a period of tension, with the candidacy for a third term of its outgoing president. The elections are scheduled for June 26, but the Constitution as well as the peace agreements signed in 2000 limit the number of presidential mandates to two, hence significant popular protest, repressed in blood and terror.

This program was recorded a few days before the official announcement of the outgoing president's candidacy at the end of April. Among the human rights defenders who came from Burundi to alert Belgian and European decision-makers, Consolata Baranyizigiye, coordinator of Justice and Peace Burundi, gives her analysis of the situation.
