In the North and the South, for the promotion of peace, sustainable development and social justice

Political questioning of the Christian NGOs Entraide & Fraternity, Justice & Peace and Pax Christi Wallonie-Brussels, the day after the European and regional elections of June 7, 2009.

Following the elections of June 7, our Christian NGOs are calling on the four major French-speaking Belgian parties on the issues of sustainable development and social justice. Great challenges await Belgium, at the national level but also at the international level, with the future presidency of the European Union and Belgium's election for three years to the Human Rights Council. We have chosen to present to you here some themes on which, over the years, our associations have developed expertise. These are specific themes linked to sustainable development and the promotion of peace, both in the North and the South of the planet. We work with movements and social organizations from the South and the North and the demands that emerge are carried by citizen groups close to us. A first part of this document is devoted to the South and a second part to Belgium. If the priorities are raised at different levels, we consider it important to articulate the questions of “peace and security” and “social justice and poverty” in the South and the North. This pushes us to lead a joint campaign. Indeed, the issues in the North and the South are linked and grassroots action is doomed to failure if it is not linked to action for structural change.
