Fight against impunity in Great Lakes Africa, the place of traditional jurisdictions

The work to combat impunity in Great Lakes Africa is one of the necessary steps in the long process towards the reconciliation of peoples. In this process, justice, which occupies an essential place, is an essential complement to the search for the truth of the unpunished acts of violence which have marked recent decades. The importance of these two elements – truth and justice – lies in the fact that they allow victims to tell the story of what they suffered and that they hold those responsible for the facts to face their responsibilities. Judicial instruments, both national and international, are therefore necessary to punish the guilty and then reintegrate them into their society, but also to provide reparation to the victims.
