2010, a European year in the fight against poverty

The European Commission has decided to proclaim 2010 the “European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion”. This choice is far from being a great first for Europe. Indeed, the heads of state and government committed, in March 2000, to giving “a decisive impetus to the elimination of poverty” by 2010. Today we are talking about nearly 80 million Europeans who still live below the poverty line (the threshold set = 60 % of the average income of the member country), or 16% of the European population!
