Together, let's take stock of the evolution of the presence of Afro-descendants in Belgium.
60 years after the decolonization of the African continent, there is reason to question the presence and role of sub-Saharan Afro-descendants in Belgian society today.
What is the evolution of the diaspora? What roles can she play?
The first immigrations to Belgium began after decolonization. Almost all of these people were post-baccalaureate students. Their number then gradually increased until today. In 2019, more than 85,000 Belgian-Congolese and Congolese reside in Belgium.
The presence and role of the Belgian-Congolese, while mixing with other populations present in Belgium, is becoming more and more significant and requires more in-depth analysis.
Today, we are simultaneously seeing the lasting settlement of Afro-descendants of Congolese origin in Belgium and the maintenance of close links with their country of origin. In Belgium, they form philanthropic associations and political pressure groups, thus becoming real actors in civil society.
This conference will attempt to take stock of the evolution of the presence of the sub-Saharan diaspora and the challenges it faces.
