Peru is experiencing around 200 social conflicts between the State, businesses and local communities, the majority of which are linked to the mega-mining projects that are being established in the country, a major producer of minerals globally (gold, silver, copper, etc.). Uninformed and unconsulted about these projects, populations try to make their voices heard and often receive a repressive response from the State through the police forces and the army. They also suffer the negative impacts of these projects which completely transform their way of life. Water is often at the center of the issues, essential to populations but usurped by mining. The lack of water or its contamination with heavy metals and chemicals (ore processing) affects crops, livestock and the health of residents. The presence of the mine implies inevitable and lasting impacts for the surrounding populations, which are however rarely recognized.

Benefiting little from the economic benefits of mining, the rural population remains poor in this country where inequalities are significant.

Through its action, Justice and Peace attempts to raise awareness, raise awareness and encourage commitment to this situation among its various audiences. Through educational tools and training, Justice and Peace is aimed at geography and human sciences teachers who would like to address the issue with their students. Through its analyses, Justice and Peace informs citizens. Through its political advocacy with Belgian and European decision-makers, Justice and Peace attempts to promote respect for human rights as an absolute priority.
