What if economics told us about happiness?

For several decades, proposals to go “beyond GDP” have been put forward and tested all over the world, with a view to defining the meaning of life in society beyond economic growth. Here are 14 sheets to debate and reflect on how to put what really matters back at the center of the functioning of our societies.

DESCRIPTION

The multifaceted crisis in which we are plunged is an opportunity to question our benchmarks, to try new experiences and to develop reflections that draw lessons from our choices, including economic ones. We must raise questions about our economic system, the limits of growth, the use of GDP and other indicators. Young people, in particular, must be made to think about these subjects.

The objective of this set of educational sheets is to provide teachers and facilitators with support to address key aspects of this vast subject: how do we evaluate the development or prosperity of a society? Should the well-being of a population be an objective for a government? Who is best placed to choose the instruments to measure this development? What really matters to us? Are there other indicators than GDP in Belgium? And elsewhere ? How do they work?

Justice and Peace provides elements of understanding and offers supports and avenues of exploitation for schools.
