The signing of the Arusha Accord in August 2000 put an end to a devastating civil war that had lasted since 1993 in Burundi. The fundamental principles of this peace agreement were ratified in a new Constitution promulgated on March 18, 2005. These texts made it possible to establish nearly fifteen years of peace and stability in Burundi. These years have shown very encouraging signs with the presence of a strong civil society and a very active press, as well as an army participating in the contingents of peacekeeping forces in the African continent.<\/p>\n
However, since 2015, Burundi has once again been mired in a major political crisis with devastating consequences for the population on a humanitarian, security and economic level. The re-election of the President in July 2015 for a controversial third term sounded the death knell. Burundi today finds itself totally isolated from the rest of the international community as evidenced by the targeted sanctions of the European Union (EU) and the United States, the cessation of part of the international cooperation towards it, or his withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in October 2016.<\/p>\n
Following a constitutional referendum, a new Constitution was promulgated on June 7, 2018. This reform could call into question the precious achievements of Arusha and tip the country towards a new conflict. Peace remains very fragile and the future of the country uncertain.<\/p>\n
